Earth Day 2010

Earth Day 2010 at Saint Edward State Park, a joint effort involving us, Friends of Saint Edward State Park, and the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission, has come and gone.  By all accounts it was a success.

The attendance probably exceeded 200 and included many families with young children. This indicates that our marketing efforts were somewhat successful.  More than 20 exhibitors, 8 speakers, multiple door prizes every 20 minutes, and food, all free was just too much to miss.

In addition, to the above organizations there were numerous volunteers who graciously donated their time and energy. Their efforts are deeply appreciated, especially those of Janet Hayes who tirelessly rounded up donations, Janice Gerrish who makes food handling/planning look easy, Pat Hill who kept everything and everyone running smoothly, and John Riehner who stepped in at the last minute to flawlessly manage the complicated door prize registration. And of course everyone's favorite Ranger Mohammad Mostavinassab, who skillfully orchestrated the door prize drawings and periodic announcements like a seasoned pro.  All in all a great team, without which this event would not have been possible or successful.

This is an annual event and next year we hope to make it even bigger and better.  The informal theme will tentatively remain youth engagement in environmental exploration. It is becoming all too clear that today's youth are suffering from what is being termed, nature deficit disorder.  There are many reasons for this, but the cure is simple: outdoor activity.  We hope to spur more of that through events like this.
